A Community Police Safety App & Safe Encounter

Pray for Sonya Massey: GoVia: Highlight A Hero – Modernizing Police Accountability

On July 6, 2024, Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old African-American woman, was tragically shot and killed in her home by Deputy Sean Grayson of the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office in Woodside Township near Springfield, Illinois. Massey had called 911 to report a possible prowler on her property. The responding officer, Grayson, who was later fired and charged with murder, had a troubling history, including a discharge from the Army for serious misconduct and multiple DUI offenses. This tragic event underscores the urgent need for accountability and transparency in police encounters—a need that GoVia: Highlight A Hero aims to address.

GoVia: Highlight A Hero is an innovative solution designed to modernize police encounters and foster accountability through a comprehensive rating system. This platform allows citizens to rate and review their interactions with police officers, providing valuable feedback that can highlight commendable behavior and identify problematic conduct. In the case of Sonya Massey, such a system could have flagged Grayson’s history of misconduct and potentially prevented the tragic outcome.

The GoVia app also connects individuals to supportive community resources, including medical and legal Zoom support groups, ensuring that those involved in police encounters have immediate access to professional assistance. This feature is crucial for individuals experiencing trauma or legal complexities, offering them real-time support during and after interactions with law enforcement.

Crowdsourced accountability is another key component of GoVia. By aggregating and analyzing feedback from the community, the app promotes transparency and trust between civilians and police departments. In Massey’s case, bodycam footage from another deputy revealed that she had rebuked Grayson, who responded with threats before fatally shooting her. GoVia’s rating system could have provided a platform for previous complaints or concerns about Grayson’s behavior, prompting earlier intervention and possibly preventing such an outcome.

Furthermore, GoVia supports advocacy and policies aimed at achieving health equity by addressing the social determinants of mental health. The app offers live Zoom sessions with health professionals and attorneys, providing critical support to individuals in crisis. By doing so, GoVia not only aids in immediate crisis management but also contributes to long-term community well-being.

Our goal with GoVia is to directly support residents in improving their community’s health and safety. By providing access to resources that help close the health equity gap, we aim to empower individuals and ensure that all community members are treated with dignity and respect during police encounters. The app’s comprehensive approach—combining real-time support, a robust rating system, and crowdsourced accountability—promotes a safer, more transparent, and equitable environment for all.

The tragic case of Sonya Massey highlights the critical need for such a solution. By implementing GoVia, we strive to prevent similar incidents and foster a culture of accountability and trust in law enforcement. Through innovative technology and a commitment to community support, GoVia: Highlight A Hero is poised to make a significant impact on modernizing police encounters and promoting justice for all.
